Bowerbird

Regarded by some bird experts as the peak of avian evolution, and even a natural wonder, the Bowerbird has accomplished remarkable feats in architecture as some species have developed tool using capabilities. The males construct elaborate bowers from which to attract a female and perform their courtship displays. These bowers are fabricated from sticks and are filled with bright and colourful objects such as shiny seashells, coloured pebbles, glass, flowers, fruit, berries, paper and so on. The leaves and flowers are replaced as they wilt, often daily. Some species will show a specific colour or object preference. Birds living near populated areas have been known to enter houses and steal ornaments for their bowers!

This is sexual advertising at its loudest! The birds themselves are quite plain, it is their artistic displays, rather than their plumage, that attracts the female. It appears that the more dull and drab a Bowerbird (for some have bright plumage) the more elaborate and colourful the bower.

These bowers take many shapes and forms. Some species will use twigs to paint their bowers with a mixture of saliva and crushed leaves or charcoal. All bowers are constructed with crisscrossed and interwoven sticks and some are even glued together with a slimy fungus.

This bowerbird has collected broken glass, aluminium foil, green seed pods and toy soldiers! Overall colour preferences for this fellah are white, green with a dash of red and blue!
His nest is in a school grounds, right near where the kids play cricket!

The Aboriginal people called this bird the ‘ghost bird’ because it may also collect bones for its bower. If you encounter Bowerbird with bones, do you hang onto the old bones of your past - or are you able to ‘let go’ and release the past, especially past romanic liasons? The association with ghosts might also be related to the fact that the bowerbird can throw his voice and imitate the sounds of dogs, people and other birds; things which aren’t there.

In the Dreaming, the bowerbird was a man who took much pleasure in killing people, by enticing them closer with sounds of prey. He is finally caught and as punishment, changed into the bowerbird with a short beak, instead of a long one like the spear with which he originally killed with. In effect, his power for destruction has been removed. Perhaps you take enjoyment in some pleasure which could be damaging to your health, or risky…. Changes need to be made before life’s circumstances bring them on.

Bowerbirds perform stunning courtship displays, and some are as clumsy as they are graceful. It seems their dances are not purely for romantic reasons as they perform out of season - perhaps they are practising? Bowerbird caught dancing might remind you to enjoy life’s dance, whatever the season.

Incidentally, the male will often mate with more than one female and does not participate in nest building or rearing of the young. In relevant situations, single parenthood might be an issue.

If one of these extraordinary birds touches your life, art, beauty and pleasure are indicated. Attempts to impress and attract may be a compelling cause behind one’s actions. Appreciation of the finer things in life is highlighted, however be aware if there is a tendency within yourself to overcompensate for any personally perceived physical lack; or on the other hand, to use personal beauty rather than talent to move through life.

Home-making and decorating are the more mundane aspects of this symbol, and Bowerbird can indicate a new home, re-decoration, renovation, and union (marriage). Above all, Bowerbird brings the dance of life, the joy of nature, romance, artistry and pleasure in construction to whatever endeavour you are working on.

Spider

Spider

Seduction. Morals. Weaving. Fear. Victim. World Wide Web. Reprisals.

To many Australians the word ‘spider’ recalls the deadly funnel web and the red-back on the toilet seat. Both species have been known to cause severe reactions, and even death with their bites.

A Dreaming about Spider[1] from northern Queensland links her with sexuality and desire – a recently bereaved raunchy seductress (or ‘black widow’!) ignores propriety and focuses obsessively on her sexual desires, seducing some men and rejecting others. Her selectiveness causes trouble, as well as jealousy among the married women, resulting in a great rift among the tribes’ people. In this Dreaming, Spider and her lovers turn themselves into spiders to escape punishment for not resisting their lusty desires. This Dreaming is quite in depth with drama, intrigue, magic, and, of course, desire and seduction. It teaches an important moral about sexual restraint and the importance of obeying tribal law (or your personal morals). As an archetype, it’s equivalent in the Bible would be the law not to covet another’s wife (or husband, as Spider did!)

Another Dreaming from the Victoria Desert region[2], has a young Spider girl who goes to great lengths to seduce a boy undergoing initiation. To remind all of the importance of obeying tribal law, they are now separated from their tribe as two identical stars in the heavens.

The analogy of the seductive spider is seen in the web that entraps. As a universal symbol, each type of spider can represent many themes; such as a money spider, a huntsman, a daddy longlegs, redback and so on. Power, charisma, sexuality, intrigue and cunning can be typical Spider qualities... though it is all flexible; a Daddy Longlegs might be more evocative of childhood and safety.

On the flipside, the opposite of seduction, one Dreaming has spider a faithful wife who is very good at weaving bags.[3] Her husband disappears, and a bad spirit abducts her, thinking of making a profit by bartering her bags – she just gave them away as gifts. She refuses to make them for him, in case her husband returns and finds her with another man, so the spirit makes a rope and ties her between two trees. To this day, the spider weaves her web between trees. This Dreaming brings up issues along being faithful, retribution, values, and even commercialism.

The web in various cultures depicts the web of life, fate and ensnarement. A spider web is a sign to cast your own web, to actively seek what it is you want. If a web is discovered torn, it may be time to backtrack and cover old ground, to make amendments in some way. It is a good time to clarify your goals. Spider focuses on attracting her blessings, why don’t you? A web with plenty of entombed insects is a good sign your own web is strong and well constructed.

During the beginning of writing this text, I was bitten on the crown by an Eastern Monkey Spider. Until more recently, this spider was thought to be almost as toxic as the funnelweb. I was certainly sick! I have been bitten by many spiders over the years, they are a recurrent theme in my life and yes, I can ‘divine’ my own personal message about why. Maybe I did GET the lesson, it’s now been ten years since I was bitten or stung by something except mosquitoes!

If you encounter Spider in a web with a well packaged meal on store, think about having your own ‘nest egg”. If you kill a spider for safety, fear or by accident - was Spider ‘in the wrong’ to warrant death - or just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Understanding and accepting the negatives of life are a Spider lesson, as well as releasing the need for self-sabotage. How often do you plan to do something or make a change, then for some reason, it just doesn’t happen? Or you get caught in another web, so to speak?

If you have no fear of Spider, and especially if you feel drawn to her, look at your life and see if you are not about to be caught in some seductively soft, strong silky threads! You may feel passionate or excited about something. Stop and look, is there an almost invisible web that can ensnare you in some way? Or, are you weaving one yourself?

If you are frightened of Spider, look at the other fears in your life. What are you frightened of? How does it affect your life? Is your reaction to Spider similar to another reaction, to something else? What else in your life gives you these feelings? Spider appearing can call for exploring your shadow side, that side which experiences fear, terror and powerlessness. By bringing your fears into the light they are unable to sneak up on you unawares –“what you can’t predict, you can’t prevent”.
